Computer Randomly Shuts Off
« on: June 23, 2013, 11:23:00 PM »
Basically whenever I play a game that requires my computer to work at all, I get to play for about 20 minutes before my computer completely shutting off, I downloaded a temp scan and turns out one of my PSU 12+ voltages is at 10, i'm not sure if that would make a huge difference but i'm sure a computer person here could tell me. I've literally updated all my drivers checked multiple forums about it. Screenshot of my temps and voltages: My GPU Temp rises to 120 before crashing. I've been told by a few people it is psu and a few it could be gpu, Figured i'd get another opinion. Thanks.

All of those voltages are lower than they should be, I suspect you have a faulty or bad PSU like you've put others have said. I recommend replacing it ASAP.

The voltages are a bit low, but the true concern is when they're around 3/4 of what they should be. So +12 is generally OK to 10 volts.

If your GPU runs up to 120 celcius then that's the issue. Most boards made in the past 5-6 years have protection on the bios for auto shutdown to prevent the chips from being ruined from running too hot. And that's generally defaulted at 100-120 celcius depending on the motherboard manufacturer and bios manufacturer.

Thank you all very much for the advice. I don't have a whole lot of money so which would my best bet me, GPU or PSU, PSU is cheaper obviously but I want what can make my computer work again.

I'd go GPU for the simple fact that it's the most likely cause and it's what I'd replace if it was brought to me. I'm a computer tech so ye.

Plus, looking at my stats I'd say voltage isn't that big a deal. To truly check voltage you'd want to check a multimeter.

Before you actually assume GPU because you didn't provide anything that could say it's the GPU, run a benchmark test with something like MSI Kombuster which will also show you your GPU temp during it to see if it is actually your GPU overheating like fuck.

Thank you all for the great advice, if somebody could close the thread it'd be great, I spent 3 hours last night cleaning out my GPU fan, working just fine now, wasn't the comp just turns out i'm retarded.

Yup, remember to clean out your PC every once in a while. I try and do it at least 3 times a month since my dog sheds a ton and it's very dusty around my house.

Locked on request.
