I recently bought VIP and I really am enjoying it, so I was wondering if I should get gold (I only play on HL2RP)

If you only play HRP, then no gold is to mainstream.

But if you play OCRP or HL2RP then it is kinda worth it but you should actually just do it to help out Catalyst-gaming.
That's why we call it a donation.

TL;DR: If you only play HRP I would not upgrade. But it would be nice to support CG.
