Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is celebrated every year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. While you are out BBQ'ing and partying today, remember the real reason why you have today off of school/work. Take a moment and thank those who risk their lives to protect us, or those who have but were killed doing so.
To those who have lost their lives while serving in the armed forces: Thank you. You have made the ultimate sacrifice and I will forever thank you. Rest in peace.
To those currently serving, have served, or are in training to server: Thank you. You are the heroes I have always looked up to as a kid.
